Safefood undertakes a wide ranging programme of research and knowledge gathering in order to address gaps in scientific knowledge related to food safety, food hygiene, nutrition and healthy eating. This research is used to build the evidence base for developing communications that are supported by science that is clear, authoritative, relevant and independent.

Development of a Prototype Assay for Azaspiracid Detection in Shellfish

This project developed a rapid screening assay for AZA toxins based on polyclonal antibodies. This was used to develop a rapid test based on a biosensor kit.

Assessment of the Ability of Dishcloths to Spread Harmful Bacteria to Other Kitchen Surfaces and Detergents

Dishcloths may harbour pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella and subsequently facilitate the spread of these microorganisms during cleaning.
