About this recipe

This recipe was adapted from 101+ Square Meals.

Ingredients

  • 50g / 2 oz. of plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 150g / 5 oz. of whole meal flour
  • 50g / 2 oz. of low-fat margarine
  • 25g / 1 oz. of caster sugar
  • 125ml / 4 fl oz. of semi-skimmed milk

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas mark 4.
  2. Sieve the plain flour and baking powder into a large mixing bowl.
  3. Mix in the wholemeal flour.
  4. Cut the margarine into small cubes.
  5. Rub this into the flour mix with your fingers until the mix is powdery.
  6. Mix in the sugar, then add enough milk to make a dough.
  7. Place the dough on a worktop that’s been dusted with flour, so it won’t stick.
  8. Bring the mix together with the hands until it is smooth (don’t knead the dough).
  9. Divide into 6 equal balls of dough.
  10. Pat the dough balls into round 3cm thick patties.
  11. Transfer to a baking tray and bake for 15 minutes.
  12. When baked transfer to a cooling rack and allow to cool.
