Detection and molecular characterization of selected pathogenic organisms isolated from unpasteurise

Abstract:
Surveys have shown that a substantial proportion of farm families in the Republic of Ireland consume raw milk. This practice is inadvisable because of the risk of pathogenic microorganisms being present in the milk.
As well as completing a survey of raw milk consumption by farm families, this study determined baseline values for the incidence of a number of pathogens including Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), Verocytotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC), and Salmonella species in unpasteurised milk in commercial dairy herds in the Cork region of Ireland.
