Top shelf
Foods and drinks high in fat, sugar and salt are on the top shelf of the food pyramid.
These include cakes, biscuits, sugary drinks, sweets and crisps. These foods and drinks should not be consumed every day.
There are no recommended servings for the top shelf as these foods contain little or no nutritional value and are not needed for good health.
Healthier snacks
Have healthier snacks to hand instead of top shelf foods. Some snack ideas:
• Fresh fruit
• Yoghurt
• Small wholemeal scone
• Wholemeal crackers with cheese
• Fruit and nut mix
Reduce salt intake
Use pepper, herbs and spices to add flavour to food instead of salt. If you are buying processed foods, check the label and choose those with less salt.
